Hi. I’m going to share my experiences visiting one of the most extraordinary museums in Singapore. The Red Dot Museum is located near the iconic Marina Bay, and I discovered it while strolling around the area one evening. I was captivated by its intriguing architecture, which I had never seen before. It is a two-story building situated sideways in the Marina Park area, and its design stands out prominently in its surroundings, easily visible from afar. I had read about the Red Dot Design Awards before my visit, but I didn't know they had a museum specifically honoring the award winners and participants, which I found really interesting.

According to its website, the museum is a “physical embodiment” of the international Red Dot Design Awards, exhibiting over 500 award-winning designs recognized by Red Dot. Launched in 2017, the museum was initially intended to showcase city planners' blueprints of the Marina Bay District, but its purpose was later changed. The architecture features a strong geometrical form with playful compositions of structural steel elements, making it quite distinctive.

Upon entering the museum, you are greeted by numerous souvenirs related to Red Dot, including books curated to honor Red Dot awardees from various years. Next to the souvenirs is the ticket booth and a café, although I did not visit the café at that time. The ticket itself costs around SGD12, which can be refunded through purchases of food and souvenirs. Visitors are then guided to the second floor where all the artworks are displayed. The exhibition area is quite small; fortunately, I was the only person there since I visited on a weekday during office hours—it would likely be crowded on weekends.

The designed products showcased are extraordinary, and they all seem to share a common theme of innovation rooted in advancements in materials, which fascinated me as a material science major. Most of the designs are sustainable with a futuristic touch aimed at making life easier for people. One particularly interesting piece was futuristic-looking gloves designed for barcode reading in the logistics industry, eliminating the need for extra tools and thus making work easier for employees. Upstairs, there are also many quirky items like ergonomic fire extinguishers, each accompanied by descriptive information about its history and functionality. The range of exhibits is wide, covering cooking, textiles, furniture, and even science and healthcare.

Overall, the museum offers a wide selection of fascinating products with unique state-of-the-art designs and practical functions. However, all the innovative products are displayed only upstairs, while the first floor is reserved for souvenirs. The museum is relatively small, so it could get quite crowded during peak seasons. Despite these shortcomings, it is a must-visit for anyone interested in product design, offering valuable insights from its displays. It's definitely worth checking out during your trip to the Marina District!

Some of the unique souvenirs on the 1st floor welcomed you upon your entrance.

The showcased product designs include ergonomic fire extinguishers and smart working gloves.

The interior design is modern and minimalist, pleasing enough for your Instagram feeds.
