Hi, it's your boy Sal. In this post, I'm going to tell you about my experience trekking in Tosari, Pasuruan. I never expected to go trekking in this place. During my trip to Bromo, we chose to stay in Lereng Bromo Hotel for a day after our Bromo mountain excursion. We reached the hotel by jeep directly from Bromo. Later, we felt bored since we had plenty of time left that day, and there was no public transportation available. Therefore, we decided to stroll around our hotel, which is in the village of Tosari. We did this twice: once in the afternoon after our trip to Bromo and again the next morning.

Tosari is a village located in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. According to Wikipedia, this village is in the Tengger district, at an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level. This elevation makes Tosari the highest district in East Java. Due to its high altitude, the average temperature is similar to that of the mountains, around 5-10 degrees Celsius. Tosari, located in Pasuruan, serves as one of the entrances to Bromo Mountain, alongside Probolinggo, Lumajang, and Malang (I'll discuss Bromo in a separate post).

In the afternoon, we decided to stroll by heading left, uphill towards Pasar Desa Tosari. We were amazed by the cleanliness and smoothness of the roads, as well as the tidy, well-managed residential areas and roadside stalls. When we reached the market, some stalls were already closed since we arrived in the afternoon; it seemed they closed promptly at 5 PM, unlike in Jakarta or other big cities where stalls operate 24 hours. We then visited Balai Desa Tosari, the local government office in Tosari. Since it was the weekend, there weren't many people there, so we could explore the building more freely. Later, we continued walking along the road without a specific direction and returned to the hotel at 6 PM.

The next morning, at 6 AM, we ventured out to explore more of the surrounding village. This time, we wanted to delve into the village itself rather than sticking to the main road. We wandered through narrow paths between houses, marveling at the terraced house structures built on the hillsides, which created a maze-like feel. We discovered that some of the local houses incorporated Hindu elements into their architecture.

Later, we returned to walking along the main road. At that time, the road was not very crowded; there were only one or two vehicles passing by, mostly jeeps or trucks transporting vegetables grown by locals. It was safe to walk along the side of the road, and occasionally even in the middle, though we had to watch out for passing vehicles. The morning sunlight filtering through the green pine trees created a stunning scenery, almost reminiscent of Switzerland rather than Indonesia. The picturesque surroundings could instantly alleviate stress and make you want to linger.

Overall, this impromptu stroll turned out to be one of the best trekking experiences I've had. While most of my previous treks were through forests, exploring the local village added a unique and memorable dimension. If you find yourself near Bromo, do visit this beautiful village—I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
