Book Review : The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa

Hi there! I'm going to share a quick review of a book I recently read called "The Travelling Cat Chronicles" by Hiro Arikawa. I picked up this book during a trip, drawn in by its cover featuring a cat - as a cat lover, it immediately caught my attention. What started as a companion for my journey turned into a book I absolutely fell in love with. Warning to potential readers: have plenty of tissues on hand, because this book will have you sobbing just as much as I did.

The author, Hiro Arikawa, is a Japanese writer known for her fiction works, many of which revolve around cat-related themes. "The Travelling Cat Chronicles" is a heartwarming tale narrated by a stray cat named Nana who finds companionship with a young man named Satoru. Despite initially being wary of Satoru's kindness, Nana eventually learns to trust him and accompanies him on a journey across Japan in Satoru's silver van. Unbeknownst to Nana, Satoru is secretly seeking a new home for him. Throughout their travels, they visit Satoru's old friends, each with their own struggles. Despite their efforts, Nana remains unadopted. In the end, Satoru decides to entrust Nana to his aunt, hoping she will provide a loving home for him.

Without giving away too much, I'll just say that the book's conclusion left me in tears. The deep bond between Nana and Satoru, portrayed not just as pet and owner but as lifelong friends, resonated deeply with me. If you've ever had a pet cat or have a soft spot for them, "The Travelling Cat Chronicles" will tug at your heartstrings. One quote from Nana particularly stuck with me:

"I am Satoru’s one and only cat. And Satoru is my one and only human. And a proud cat like me wasn’t about to abandon his pal."

This novel is an absolute emotional rollercoaster that will make you want to hug your cat tight and thank them for being a part of your life.
